What is Detox, and Why Is It Important?

Generally speaking, detoxification, or detox, is the process of eliminating toxic substances from the body. In the context of addiction recovery, these substances are psychoactive drugs and alcohol. While the consumption of such substances may provide temporary pleasure, they can be harmful and even life-threatening over time. As a result, detox is crucial for individuals who have developed a dependency on these substances as it provides a safe and comfortable path through withdrawal.

The use of drugs and alcohol often creates a temporary feeling of euphoria, leading individuals to seek repeated use. Over time, tolerance builds, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effect. This can result in addiction, where the individual becomes dependent on the substance to function daily.

Recognizing the pattern of increased tolerance, increased drug or alcohol use, and physical/psychological dependence is a critical step in addressing addiction. Both the individual and their loved ones must be aware of the signs of dependency to seek appropriate treatment.

Withdrawal Symptoms

When an individual addicted to drugs or alcohol begins the recovery process, their body and mind must adjust to the absence of these substances. Physically, this adjustment takes more than just willpower. When the body becomes dependent on a substance, withdrawal symptoms creep in when that substance is removed. These symptoms can vary depending on the substance.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms:

  • Shakes/tremors including seizures
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety & elevated heart rate
  • Sweating

Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms:

  • Coldsweats, goosebumps, chills
  • Anxiety & irritability
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Insomnia & restlessness

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms:

  • Panic attacks
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Seizures
  • Insomnia, restlessness, irritability
  • Nausea

Treatment for Withdrawal Symptoms

The severity of withdrawal symptoms varies from person to person, but they can be challenging to manage without medical support.

Medically-assisted detox programs use medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, providing a safer and more comfortable detoxification process. These medications are carefully regulated and monitored to ensure patient safety.

Types of Detox Programs

Inpatient Medically-Assisted Detox

Inpatient medically-assisted detox is considered the safest and most effective method for achieving recovery. Facilities like All In Solutions offer comprehensive care with around-the-clock medical and clinical support from accredited and experienced staff.

Clients undergo a structured medication taper to manage withdrawal symptoms, complemented by non-narcotic “comfort meds” for severe cases. This kind of treatment protocol, delivered in a structured environment, ensures that clients are safe and comfortable while they start their recovery. Holistic therapies like acupuncture, massage, and guided meditation can also be used to control withdrawal symptoms.

Benefits of Inpatient Detox Include:

  • A supervised environment provides accountability and reduces the risk of relapse
  • Access to continuous medical and therapeutic support
  • Higher completion rates and long-term recovery success

Ambulatory (Outpatient) Detox

Outpatient detox involves regular doctor visits without overnight stays. The doctor prescribes detox medications, relying on the patient to use them responsibly. However, outpatient detox is generally less effective and riskier than inpatient programs due to the lack of continuous supervision and support. Many patients do not complete outpatient detox, leading to higher relapse rates.

Rapid Detox

Rapid detox uses anesthesia to sedate the patient while their body eliminates toxins. This method is not widely recommended due to its high risk and failure to address the underlying causes of addiction. Additionally, most insurance plans do not cover rapid detox, making it a costly option.

The Detox Process

Medical staff conducts a comprehensive health assessment upon admission to a detox program to create a tailored detox protocol.

Timeline:

  • Days 1-10: Medication taper, with vital signs monitored every four hours. Increased mental clarity is typically observed towards the end of this phase.
  • Post-Taper: Monitoring for post-acute withdrawal symptoms and providing “comfort meds” as needed. Ongoing therapy and group counseling sessions support mental and emotional recovery.

Medications Used for Detox Taper

For alcohol detox, benzodiazepines are the most common medication used for the taper. For individuals who are at a high risk for seizures, Kepra may also be used.

In the past, methadone was a commonly used medication for opioid detox, but it has been largely replaced by buprenorphine. Today, Subutex, Suboxone, or other buprenorphine-containing medications are used to taper clients off of opioids. Lucemyra can also be used for clients who don’t respond well to buprenorphine.
