What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential, or inpatient, treatment is a level of care where people live at a treatment facility for a week to a few months and receive medical intervention until they have completed their program.[1] The structure of this program allows for 24 hours of clinical support, clinical structure, and an immersion into a therapeutic environment, unlike the more flexible outpatient program, which allows you to return home after each treatment session.

Residential treatment is recommended for those who require more clinical support than they can receive in an outpatient program, based on the severity of their substance use disorder, their co-occurring mental health disorders, or a history of unstable living environments or relapse in less structured settings.

At All In Solutions, we use a personalized approach to treatment for each person who comes through our door, developing a treatment program based upon a comprehensive assessment of their needs. The development of your treatment plan will be based not only on the substance abuse issue but on the many behavioral, emotional, and relational factors associated with your situation.

Who Is Residential Treatment For?

Residential treatment is recommended for those who have completed the detoxification process but still require intensive support before proceeding to outpatient treatment or for those diagnosed with a severe substance use disorder requiring 24-hour observation and clinical intervention.

It’s often the right fit for those:

If you have any questions as to whether or not residential treatment would benefit you, our admissions team will perform a thorough evaluation or provide an evaluation based on your personal clinical history.

Life After Residential: The Continuum of Care

Completing residential treatment is a major milestone. However, the period following the completion of residential treatment is one of the most vulnerable points in the recovery process.[3] At All In Solutions, discharge from residential treatment is a carefully planned transition to the next appropriate level of care, not an abrupt end.

Most residential clients will step down to either a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which allows them to continue receiving clinical support and care while still being able to experience some degree of independence. For those who need a structured sober living environment during their transition back into everyday life, we also provide referrals for sober living facilities. Aftercare planning begins during residential treatment so that every client is discharged with date-specific appointments and other resources in place.

The Transition From Detox to Residential Treatment

For many clients, moving from detox to the residential program is a seamless transition. Detoxification and the residential program are the first two components of the continuum of care; detox stabilizes the body, and the residential phase begins the deeper work necessary to recover.

At All In Solutions, this transition is built into the admissions process. Those who complete detoxification at one of our facilities will have continuity of care as they move into the residential program, as the clinical support team will already have familiarity with the client, their needs, and their treatment goals.

No new start is needed, only the next step forward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Residential Treatment

How long does residential treatment last?

The length of time in a residential treatment center varies based on needs and treatment progress. Most residential treatment programs last between 30 days and 90 days; however, some clients may achieve better recovery outcomes with a longer stay. Duration is determined collaboratively between the client and their treatment team throughout the rehabilitation experience. At All In Solutions, clients who plan to step down to PHP are often recommended to complete 3 to 4 weeks of detox and residential care first, while those not intending to continue with further treatment may benefit from a longer residential stay.

A medically supervised detox program addresses managing the physiological impacts of physical withdrawal from a substance. Residential treatment begins once the physiological withdrawal process is complete and addresses the psychological, behavioral, and emotional issues related to addiction through structured therapeutic programming.

The importance of family involvement in recovery cannot be understated. Family therapy sessions are built into the residential treatment program. Family visitation policies will be reviewed and discussed during the admissions process. Family involvement in a manner that supports the client’s treatment goals is encouraged.

Some health insurance plans will provide coverage for residential treatment. The extent of coverage is determined by the health insurance plan and provider. Prior to committing to residential treatment, the admissions department will verify health insurance benefits at no cost.

Successfully completing residential treatment is a pivotal moment in the recovery process and signifies the beginning of the next phase of recovery rather than the end. The assigned case manager will work collaboratively with the client during residential treatment to develop an aftercare plan that may include PHP, IOP, sober living, and outpatient services based on the client’s needs and goals.
