What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A Partial Hospitalization Program is a structured, evidence-based level of care that provides intensive treatment during the day while allowing clients to return to their home or sober living environment in the evening. PHP sits between residential treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) on the continuum of care, offering more clinical support than standard outpatient services, but without the requirement of overnight stays.[1]

Clients in PHP typically attend programming five days per week for five to six hours per day. During that time, they engage in a full schedule of therapy sessions, skills-building groups, medication management, and clinical support; the same depth of care they would receive in an inpatient setting, structured into a day treatment format.

PHP is appropriate for a wide range of individuals: those stepping down from residential treatment who still need intensive support, those who require a higher level of care than a standard IOP can provide, and those whose circumstances make full residential treatment impractical but who nonetheless need comprehensive clinical programming to address their substance use disorders and any co-occurring mental health conditions.

Who Is Partial Hospitalization Program Right For?

PHP functions as an important level of care and the right fit is determined with a clinical evaluation of each client’s needs. PHP is often the best option for:

Building Life Skills Alongside Clinical Care

Unlike in a full residential setting, PHP allows clients to begin applying their learned recovery skills to their everyday lives. Clients in our PHP program return to their living settings, either home or sober living, after treatment each day, which allows the recovery skills being learned and developed, such as coping skills, relapse prevention strategies, and life skills, to be tested and applied in real time.

This is not a by-product of the PHP structure, but rather a core therapeutic benefit of it. Clients who continue to practice recovery skills and manage triggers in non-clinical environments are better prepared for successful long-term sobriety.[4] This is achieved through the consistency of daily intensive treatment while also progressively developing their ability to be independent.

Each level of care supports recovery progress

PHP at All In Solutions is built around a structured daily schedule that combines clinical rigor with genuine human support. Each week, clients engage in a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to their treatment plan and recovery goals.

PHP and the Continuum of Care

PHP exists within a well-structured continuum of care. The majority of clients enter PHP following discharge from a residential treatment program or detox, and the majority will successfully step down from PHP into the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) after completion.

This is very intentional, as each level of care reduces the intensity of treatment in a gradual process to provide clients with the time necessary to develop both confidence and stability prior to transitioning to the next treatment level.

In situations where clients are entering PHP without first completing a residential treatment program, referrals to an inpatient treatment program or detox will be provided if clinically indicated. Continuity of care across all levels of treatment continues to be of paramount importance at All In Solutions. All of our clinical teams work together to ensure that every success achieved in PHP is sustained, rather than restarted.

Frequently Asked Questions About PHP

How is PHP different from inpatient treatment?

Inpatient treatment typically requires that the client live full-time within the treatment facility, while PHP provides the same intensity of clinical programming as inpatient treatment while allowing the client to return home or to a sober living environment at night. Although PHP is the next step down from inpatient care, it continues to be one of the highest levels of outpatient treatment available.

Duration of PHP varies based on the client’s needs and level of clinical progress. Most clients complete PHP within 2 to 6 weeks before transitioning to an intensive outpatient program or other outpatient services, but others may need to stay longer. The length of time spent in PHP is determined by the client with input from their treatment team.

PHP is typically offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 or 4:00 PM, which may limit your ability to work full-time or attend school. Most clients find it beneficial to dedicate full time to their treatment during this period. You can discuss your scheduling options with your admissions specialist.

Yes, the continuum of care provides fluidity so that clients can transition from residential treatment to partial hospitalization to intensive outpatient treatment, or in the reverse direction if needed.
